I was certain that I've said everything there is to be said about Valentine's Day in Japan. You know how it goes: women give chocolates to the guys they like on Valentine's Day, and the guys reciprocate with gifts one month later on "White Day" on March 14.

Women also give "obligation chocolate" (義理チョコ) to bosses and male coworkers to stroke their egos, "friend chocolate" (ともチョコ) to their female friends, and all women buy "my chocolate" (マイ・チョコ) for themselves.

Yes, I thought I'd heard it all, and I'm sure you have too, at least until I had the following conversation with [livejournal.com profile] spatulagirl the other night:

Melanie: have you heard of Black Day?
Monica: what is black day?
Melanie: in south korea
women give choco on feb. 14
men on mar. 14
and, if you didn't get anything on V-Day or White Day...
then it's BLACK DAY on April 14th, and you go to a chinese restaurant and eat Black Noodles and mourn your single life
I LOVE IT
Monica: AHAHAHAAHAH

They supposedly dress all in black too.

Don't they have Yellow Day too? I thin it's May 14 - if you're still single after Black Day, you have to gather and eat curry. And if you DO have a lover, the same day becomes "Rose Day" when you buy your lover a bunch of roses.

What a difference a lover makes, huh ?

HAHAHA. I've been eating those Chinese black-paste noodles all my life - maybe that explains my singleness >XD

Is it too desperate if I carry the noodles with me and use them to strike up uncomfortable conversations with anyone within noodle-displaying distance? "You know what these noodles mean right?" *eyebrows going up and down*

Just wear this shirt and you'll get the same effect with half the effort!

The Japanese part is way too specific. I'm just aiming for girlfriend at the moment. I'll work my way up to specific nationalities later.

This old lady just walked up to me (I'm at Starbucks) and said, "are you talking to someone on the computer? You're giggling."

Many years B.K. (Before Katrina), I was visitng New Orleans, and kicked myself later for not buying a T-shirt that had Japanese-looking writing on it, with this translation in smaller print underneath: "Looking very Japanese but fluently saying absolutely nothing."

I'd rather stick to the traditional American Steak and a BJ day. (BTW link = NSFW, if that wasn't obvious)

I'm so glad I wasn't in Japan for Valentine's day. One of my coworkers is a young single guy who is too goofy to get dates, and so one of my young single female coworkers informed me that she and several others took him out for dinner so he could "have the experience of going on a date." Ugh, I'm not terribly fond of the guy, but how humiliating.
