I was thinking about joining the Society of Women Engineers to get my nerd-girl networking on, and then I saw the Pacific Northwest regional chapter's website. Holy shhhhhhhhhhhhhhwtfomgomgomg

...I guess I should think of it as an opportunity to contribute to the group but it just seems like a giant warning sign. =/

For now I chat up my husband, and sometimes one of our mutual friends who's a brilliant coder. I'm a little late arriving on the scene, so I don't have many tech people in my social circle! It'll be good when I finally have coworkers I can geek out with, though.

How do you get involved with these industry gatherings? Is there an expected minimum experience level?

I'm sure the only qualification is having an interest in the topic. =)

I guess I kind of stumble across events based on what I'm interested in... I like advertising & graphic design, so I keep an eye on the events calendar at the design firm down the street. I love UI design so I'm planning to start going to CHIFOO events.

When I saw "Region J" plastered across the top, I knew it needed a cheerleading/fight song. Yessss! [fists raised in air]

[I've had such a tune running through my head for a while now, overrunning every decent tune I usually have running through my head. I think I made it up, but it could have been something I absorbed unwittingly from somewhere. Most likely it's a tune I heard somewhere and subconsciously reworked it quite a bit in the futile hope of increasing the hipness molecule content of a "fight song" kind of tune, which is something direly lacking in hipness molecules, unless maybe it can be shuffled into a minor key, or have John Cage or Neil Innes or Charles Mingus or Charles Ives or Captain Beefheart rework it.]

But it could work for Region J even in its present major key. It just needs some words, some engineerin' words, like "reinforced concrete" and "amperage" and "XML." Not to mention GHz. Maybe the whole thing should be 3-letter abbrevs and acronyms.

Damn, I was going to get to sleep early, until this weirdness took over. Sorry, both to you and to me.

What's funny is that right now I can't "hear" the tune, though I'm afraid it will be back in the morning.

The damn tune came back, and I evn started writing lyrics to it:

We are the women engineers of Region J,
And if blah-blah-blah-blah, we will make your day.

Etc. etc. etc.
Blah blah blah

(to be continued...?)

Gotta love their writing style...

"As a result, there is cognizance across the region for implementing succession planning and updating the section bylaws."

If you get rid of whoever wrote that, the website might automagically start looking better, too, eh?

CHIFOO??? Gesundheit!!!

One more thing, and then I gotta sleep. Have you heard of Christopher Alexander's book A Pattern Language? An old classic by now.
